You cannot watch every number in your business every day, and you should not try. A scorecard is the short list you can, the few figures that tell you at a glance whether an area is healthy or not.
What a scorecard is
A scorecard is a short, fixed set of the few vital numbers that tell you whether an area is healthy, checked on a regular rhythm. Not ten metrics, not fifty. The handful that actually move the needle for that part of the business, and nothing else.
It is the vital few, not a dashboard of everything. A dashboard tries to show you all the data there is. A scorecard picks a side: these are the numbers that matter here, and if they are good, the rest tends to follow.
Why it matters
What you do not measure, you cannot steer. Without a scorecard you are left with two bad options: fly blind and hope the area is fine, or drown in every spreadsheet and report you can find and lose the afternoon to it.
A good scorecard does not tell you everything. It tells you the one thing you actually need to know: is this healthy or not.
A scorecard checked on a regular rhythm catches problems early, while they are still small and cheap to fix, instead of finding out three months later when the number has been quietly drifting the whole time.
